I said he swings both ways. I don't even think HE knows.

Both, I say. There's enough Mr. Humphries to go around ... I'd like some, please.

He likes to stradle the fence so he can see what's growing in both gardens.

I really think he would help out if a rush was on, either way.I mean we have actually seen nim kissing Miss Brahms, more than Mr Lucas ever did.We have also seen him reacting to male characters too. Mostly customers of course.

Well I have to agree, I don't really think he's "one way or the other".

I think he more is than isn't, but hasn't given up on women totally by any means. He went to meet the honourable Lavina Effingham Ffoukes, and I'm sure flirted with the customer who he modelled the fur coat for, didn't he? I agree that he doesn't really know himself though, and maybe even still believes that he'll find a nice girl to settle down with rather than seriously expecting a relationship with a man.
Then again, his line "Men, you're all the same", does indicate that he doesn't see himself in quite the same way as most...so it's really hard to say. I can't remember much of Grace and Favour, but I think I felt a bit sorry for Mavis knowing she really liked him when it didn't look like he'd ever see her that way. I love the character of Mr. Humphries... and whether or not he swings one way or the other or both ways is a bit ambiguous... I like it that way... otherwise his character would not be as interesting. I do commend the writers and the cast for making AYBS? so enjoyable!

Gee Wibbly, I seem to pop in at the right moments. I was waiting for someone to put something like this on. The debate on Humphries is never ending though isn't it ? I say he's gay and wouldn't want him other wise! If he wasn't, the show wouldn't be that interesting !! lol

Remember in the episode The Hold Up, he wanted to take Miss Belfridge home, but then in the other episodes there are a lot of gay jokes.

I must admit.. I'm suprised on how many voted for "Both Ways" I was really hoping that this thread would have lite the board on fire. When it comes to AYBS? and trying to explain it to someone who has seen the show but no really watched it... the first 2 things that come out of their mouths is either.. "The show with the gay guy?" OR "The one with the lady and the different colored hair?"

Mr. Humphries' sexuality brings to the show a little mystery and a little camp. I think we can all assume pretty safely that he prefers men to women. I am quite glad myself that we all seem to adore him no matter what his preference is.

I couldn't have put these comments better myself.
Personally, I think Mr. Humphries is bi. He seems to favour men, but he's also been known to charm the ladies on occasion. <^><^><^><^><^><^><^><^><^><^><^><^>

IMO, I think for the show to say definitely one way or the other would have ruined it for us, because half the fun is leaving us guessing if he is or isn't ;)

I think the writers made a brave choice when they decided to write in a character who made his preferences known, especially at a time when gay performers weren't seen very often on TV. They were prepared for the controversy it would cause but they went ahead and did it because it was true to their own experiences and the way they saw their character. To get rid of that extra dimension of the show would have made the storylines much more limited and there'd be less tension on screen, which sitcoms need to make people believe in them, as well as featuring people who are often trapped in some way. Without the gay question, it wouldn't have worked and we probably wouldn't be talking about AYBS now.

Quote: I think the writers themselves more or less "came out" with how Mr. Humphries is seen re: his sexual preference. They may be happy and discussing their "gay" character in interviews recently, but that wasn't the case "back then." The point is...Mr. H. never does let us know what his preference really is. And back in the 70's, coming out on TV wasn't really done until Billy Crystal played a gay guy on "Soap." We assume via his mannerisms and off the cuff comments that he (Mr. H.) is a gay or bisexual man. And...when the show first aired, this concept of Mr. Humphries was not at all accepted by viewers! And...sadly John Inman has been chastised for many years by members of the gay community itself, for not fully "coming out" and saying Mr. H. was gay. The whole thing remains a mystery--and that includes Mr. Inman's personal life as well. ~~"I won't say that again; my teeth are caught up with this custard."
